Universal Studios Hollywood has announced its second Halloween Horror Nights house for 2023: Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us.”
As rumored, the house will be based on the video game, not the HBO series. The announcement video features a girl playing the game while video-chatting with two friends. As one of them is explaining a conspiracy theory, a strange symbol appears on screen and the room goes dark. Infected stalk through the shadows towards the girl before she suddenly returns to reality.
The video description reads, “Enter the world of Naughty Dog’s video game in real life, as you fight to survive and navigate your way through an abandoned Pittsburgh with Joel and Ellie.”
The house will be at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort.
“The Last of Us”
The franchise follows survivors of a fungal infection, called Cordyceps for short after the fungus it originated from. In the game, humans can be infected by breathing in spores from Infected, while infection can only be spread via bite in the television series.
The bulk of the series takes place 20 years after the initial infection in the post-apocalyptical United States of America. The Last of Us: Part I follows survivor Joel Miller on a journey to take Ellie, who is somehow immune to the fungus, to a group who believes they can make a cordyceps cure.
In the Pittsburgh portion of the game, Joel and Ellie ally with brothers Henry and Sam after being attacked by bandits.
The HBO series stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Season 1 is based on the first game, while further seasons will be based on The Last of Us: Part II.
Halloween Horror Nights 2023
Halloween Horror Nights is an annual hard-ticket event held each fall at Universal Studios Hollywood. It will take place on select nights from September 7 through October 31 this year. Tickets are on sale now.
Admission is separate from regular theme park admission. You do not need theme park admission to attend Halloween Horror Nights, but if you have a day ticket, it allows you to stay in the park to wait rather than exit and re-enter when the event opens.
In addition to “The Last of Us” haunted house, the event will feature a house based on the SYFY series “Chucky.” A fan-made speculation map includes houses inspired by “Demon Slayer,” “The Exorcist,” and Universal Studios Monsters, but none of these houses have been confirmed.
Stay tuned for more information.
