Jurassic Park: The Ride Closing for More Than a Year at Universal Studios Japan for Refurbishment

Between the impending closure of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man as well as the confirmed permanent shuttering of Terminator 2 3-D and Backdraft, there’s suddenly quite a bit of empty real estate at Universal Studios Japan. But one more attraction is being added to the mix — Jurassic Park: The Ride.

Starting September 4, Jurassic Park: The Ride will close at Universal Studios Japan for an extended refurbishment. The ride will remain shuttered through early 2025.

Universal Studios Japan quietly added the notice to their refurbishments page when August and beyond refurbishments were announced today.

Jurassic Park: The Ride opened with the park on March 31, 2001 as a mirror version of the Jurassic Park River Adventure at Universal Islands of Adventure. Much like its Orlando counterpart and the version formerly at Universal Studios Hollywood, Jurassic Park: The Ride takes guests on a floating adventure through Jurassic Park where they encounter animatronic dinosaurs and narrowly escape being eaten by a T-Rex as they plunge 85 feet into a massive splash.

On their website, the park states “As we strive to continue creating “NO LIMIT!” experiences into the future, we will continue to improve and upgrade existing attractions as well as undertake major renovations to improve show quality. As a result, Jurassic Park: The Ride will close from September 4, 2023 for a major renovation, and is expected to reopen in early 2025. We ask for your understanding and cooperation.”

With the impending absence of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man starting in January 2024, this will make two large attraction spaces at the park totally empty for more than a year. As of yet, there is no confirmation that this refurbishment is intended to upgrade the ride to Jurassic World: The Ride as seen at Universal Studios Hollywood.
