REVIEW: Sesame Street Orange Cupcake & Hello Kitty Cheese Pork Bun Dance into Universal Studios Japan

We’re dance-dance-dancing at Universal Studios Japan to the new “NO LIMIT! Parade” which kicked off earlier this week. And if you feel snacky after joining in the NO LIMIT Time show stop, you can swing by the food cart opposite “Playing with Curious George” to try two new snacks — a Sesame Street orange cupcake and a Hello Kitty pork and cheese bun!

Dazzling Ribbon Hello Kitty Bun with Cheese and Pork Filling – ¥650 ($4.77)

True to its name, this bun is quite dazzling in how adorable it is!

The white bun has two tips to represent her cat ears, with little dyed bread pieces to show her whiskers, eyes, nose, and bow. Edible glitter is sprinkled over the bow.

The paper boat has a sparkling pink design with flowers, sparks, and a disco ball Hello Kitty silhouette.

More flowers, sparks, and a shiny Hello Kitty bow sits at the center.

While it’s adorable and definitely takes a good picture, the Hello Kitty bun is rather unremarkable in taste. It’s certainly not bad, but the cheese was virtually undetectable against the standard pork bun flavor we can find at any convenience store in Japan for a third of the price.

Let’s Dance! Sesame Street Orange Cupcake – ¥550 ($4.03)

The Let’s Dance! Sesame Street Orange Cupcake is housed in this adorable paper wrapper which features the art with hip-hop Elmo and Cookie Monster seen on the merchandise.

A dollop of orange icing is on top with multicolor strands of icing and an Elmo candy piece garnishing.

When you pull the cupcake out of the wrapper, it’s revealed to be rather plain-looking at first. But looks can be deceiving.

By far and away, this was my favorite treat of the new “NO LIMIT! Parade” lineup. The cupcake is very rich and thick, unlike what you’d expect from American cupcakes. But the subtle orange flavor accented with orange peel bits mixed in makes for a unique experience.

The icing on top also tastes just like the orange drizzle from Pillsbury Orange Rolls, a personal favorite from my childhood. While it may not be a cupcake in the traditional American sense, it was still incredibly delicious and one of my favorite snacks from this park. It’s simple yet elegantly delicious!

Both of these items are now available at the food cart across from “Playing with Curious George” in the Hollywood area. Will you be chowing down on either of these new items when you visit? Let us know in the comments below!
