Universal’s Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval 2023 has spread to CityWalk, and like the past couple of events at Universal Orlando Resort, the Red Coconut Club has received a themed makeover. We swung by the Cursed Coconut Club to try the specialty cocktails.
The Cursed Coconut Club
The club is located on the second story of Universal CityWalk Orlando. The façade uses props either reused from or replicated from the Graveyard Deadly Unrest scare zone from last year’s Halloween Horror Nights.
Interior
The club’s basics, like flooring and walls, stay the same, but themed decorations are added to change the mood.
Giant tarot cards with skeletons sit above a bench seat.
There’s a Mold-A-Matic machine with a skull. It comes in green for $8.
A board reading “cursed” has been tacked up over the “red” part of the regular sign.

High West Double Rye, Peychaud’s Bitters, Abinsthe Absente, Simple Syrup, Splash of Water, and a Lemon Twist
Powerful absinthe flavors. Some will be put off by the black licorice notes, but it’s a reasonable representation of a Sazerac.

Fee Brothers Orange Bitters, Simple Syrup, Orange Zest, and a Black Cherry Garnish
This is interesting but overly sweet. In addition to what’s on the menu, it has gin, chartreuse, and sweet vermouth. Mostly just sugary and orangey, and you can taste the clove at the end. It’s okay, but we didn’t love it and wouldn’t go out of our way for it.

Orange Juice, Passion Fruit Syrup, BG Reynolds Grenadine, Fresh Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, Plantation Oftd Overproof Rum, Pusser’s Rum, Dale Degroff’s Pimento Bitters, and an Orange Wheel Garnish
This tasted like the drinks they put in the special Trader Sam’s mugs at Walt Disney World. The pimento bitters just ruin the taste. The orange is very strong, as is the alcohol, but overall this was not great, and we would not recommend it.

Angostura Bitters, Hella Smoked Chili Bitters, Monin Cinnamon Syrup, Brewed Coffee (Chilled), and an Orange Zest Slice with Clove Garnish
This is on the cusp of delicious, and maybe as the even goes on, they’ll get it there. The cinnamon and coffee come through nicely and almost makes it taste like a Black Russian. The chili bitters are very mild and give a bit of heat without a flavor that overpowers. If espresso martinis are your thing, you’ll enjoy this.

Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup, Hibiscus Syrup, New Amsterdam Gin, Bitter Truth Creme de Violette, and Fresh Raspberries
Fresh raspberry is the predominant flavor. A hint of lemon, definitely sweet, but not overly so. The crème de violet isn’t very strong, but the rest is a delightfully fresh and fruity drink that we really enjoyed.
Universal’s Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval runs from February 4 through April 16.
