Even More Layoffs Confirmed at Universal Orlando Resort Due to Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic

In addition to the official delay of Universal’s next theme park, Epic Universe, layoffs have been reported at Universal Orlando Resort. In a statement to Spectrum News 13, Universal confirmed that it has “again made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce to reflect current priorities and needs.” Journalist Ashley Carter tweeted about an update she received from Universal Orlando in regards to Epic Universe and layoffs:

Carter also confirmed that there have been more layoffs. Her image of Universal’s statement reads:

We have again made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce to reflect current priorities and needs. As always, we are aware of the impact this will have on those affected by this decision and their families. We are grateful for their contribution and we will support them through this process with severance pay, subsidized health benefits and reemployment assistance. We continue to have confidence in the long term future of our business, our industry and our community.

This is the second wave of layoffs at the company, as just last month, Universal Orlando Resort laid off an undisclosed number of employees in their Parks & Resorts department.

Universal Parks & Resorts has suffered a monumental 94% loss of revenue this quarter thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and, like all Orlando theme parks, will likely be recovering economically for years.
